Description: In a future where psychics called Seraphs belong to the ANGEL institute, Tamar must team up with Kir, an old rival, to save ANGEL from destructive forces. Can the two Seraphs find love and passion in a dark, bureaucratic world which seeks to manipulate and destroy their kind? Blurb: Tamar is a Seraph, a member of an influential organization of powerful psychics known as ANGEL. Seraphs are humans who have evolved to have varying psychic abilities. Possessing a greater lifespan and intelligence than ordinary humans, Seraphs within ANGEL grow to their full potential through study and practice. In the year 4287 on planet Earth, ANGEL has deteriorated to become the harbor of the bored elite. A small but passionate rebellion rises to take back the power they once held. In pursuit of his own dreams, Tamar is caught in the chaotic struggle for evolution, power, and to define the greater good. Kir, an old rival from his days as an apprentice within ANGEL, resurfaces, threatening to shred Tamar's world into bits...along with his heart. Their ideals clash, and a bitter fight ensues between them. Can Tamar's courage save Kir from the darkness which plagues him while remaining true to himself and what he holds dear?

Irritated, Tamar struggled not to drum his fingers on the desk before him. He didn't want to look like one of the non-activated--those impetuous, immature students back in the halls of the ANGEL academy who had yet to have their "Archangel" DNA turned on. After all, he was one of the activated. He had earned his extended lifespan through countless years of trials, study, and discipline.

But the female official before him tried his patience. She might be pretty if she showed any emotion. Or passion. Or any amount of ambition whatsoever to do anything besides sitting behind a desk.

Tamar read her name badge: "Alia". The woman's auburn hair packed tight into a bun. Her smooth features and bright but bored brown eyes would've placed her age at around maybe twenty-two, twenty-five Terran years at most. But like him, she was a Seraph and had undergone the necessary psychic development and training at the academy. Perhaps she graduated years ago--decades, even. In fact, it was quite conceivable she had a few centuries on him.

It would explain her unhurried, apathetic countenance while she reviewed the myriad of datadocs required to process his application. In Tamar's experience, the longer one stayed inside the walls of ANGEL, the more complacent one got. Deadline? Schedules? What was time to someone whose lifespan was immeasurable?

He couldn't wait to get out of there.

"Do you have Form 31-B filled out?" Alia inquired in a monotone which grated on Tamar's ears.

Tamar gritted his teeth. "Yes." He made a few quick strokes on his datapad and sent the information to Alia's computer.

Maybe she is the computer.

"Excellent. You're now approved." She smiled, but her eyes remained blank. It took every measure of Tamar's training and self-control to not let down his shields, even for a peek, to see what really went on beneath her uninterested surface. If caught, the disciplinary actions he would face afterwards wouldn't be worth it. Not to mention it would nullify all of the datadocs he just had reviewed and approved over the past several hours, and the hard-earned clearance would be revoked.

Not worth it not worth it not worth it not worth it.... He forced a polite smile onto his face. "Thank you."

All that just to be allowed to use my abilities outside of ANGEL. How fragging fantastic.

* * * *

"Tam, I don't get it," stated an exasperated Chelsea. "This was for a vital, super-big assignment you were given from the powers on high. And you still had to fill out that damned Form 31-B?"

Tamar stared at her. She was a close friend of his back from his days as an apprentice within the ANGEL academy. Tiny with cropped blonde hair, she passed for a dainty little pixie. That is, until she opened her mouth.

Mustering the faintest hint of a shrug in reply, he continued to walk with her down the hallway. He didn't understand why all of those datadocs had been required either. But at least it was over. He had approval, and that was what mattered.

"But that's...insane. You were ordered to assist with the investigation. Shouldn't that have superseded whatever authority the application process had?"

"Sorry, Chel. It's ANGEL. What did you expect?"

She shook her head. "But still."

"At least I got clearance, right? Now we can meet up with the others. Just promise me they're solid, okay?"

"Solid as steel. But they don't like this either. It smells wrong, you know what I mean?"

Tamar nodded in agreement, and she kept talking. Too distracted by reading the details in the assignment briefing on his datapad, he didn't hear much of it. What he read sounded grim, and a bit dangerous. A potential terrorist movement within ANGEL? The idea of violent Seraphs disturbed him.

"This woman was an activated Seraph with top scores in ANGEL academy. She was the golden child. Her professors adored her. She was going to marry another activated Seraph she studied with, who also had been a top student. Why would she go rogue?"

He let out a long breath he didn't realize he had been holding. "Wedding jitters? The cake was poisoned? On the outs with the spouse-to-be? Maybe he didn't like the cake either? Perhaps they lied about the cake, said it was strawberry filling and it was raspberry--"

Chelsea rolled her eyes. "Quit with the cake, Tam. They didn't even have the wedding yet, how could there have been cake?"

"Sorry, sorry." He ran his hand through his wild, short brown hair, trying to think of more questions to ask. This entire situation seemed off-kilter to him. The particulars, his involvement...something wasn't adding up. Important facts must be hidden somewhere in the details. The devil is in the details, he mused.

"So, Chel...why did they want me on board anyhow? I thought the ANGEL heads didn't trust me."

"That's 'cause your methods are unconventional at best, and reckless at worst. But you're smart and you get the job done."

"Yeah, but--"

"No 'buts'. Just think of it as a way to make up for that diplomatic incident, okay?"

He frowned. Did she have to bring that up? "I'm not the diplomatic type."

"So I've noticed," she commented drily.

Probably would be wise to change the subject. "What happened to her spouse-to-be?"

"Ellsa? Vanished. Which is unfortunate, because she might've been able to answer some of our questions."

He sighed. "Figures. How about close friends? Ex-lovers?"

"Nope, we've tried. We even mention Sera's name, and they either freak out or clam up on us. They've denied knowing anything about everything."

Lovely. "Anyone tried scanning them?"

"We're still working on obtaining the permissions for that."

In mid-stride, Tamar came to a screeching halt. "What? We have a major investigation underway for a potential terrorist threat to ANGEL, and we don't have scanning clearance?"

She smiled at him. "'Fraid not."

"But what--"

"We're going undercover instead."

His insides began to churn. "I've got a bad feeling about this," he mumbled.

"It's okay, we already have an alibi." Her smile turned into a huge, mischievous grin. "Our names are being added to the suspects list."

"WHAT?"

Chelsea laughed. "Yeah! Fragging hilarious, isn't it?"
